Medical matters

From paediatricians, dentists, first aid to what to do in an emergency.

Paediatricians & Other Medical Services for Children

Finding the right paediatrician for you and your child is never easy. Personalities, location, health insurance, language are some of the many factors you will need to take into consideration.

Ask relatives, neighbours, colleagues, friends and other TMG members about the paediatricians they use. But remember, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Information Center provides information about medical institutions with staff who speak foreign languages and information about the medical and health insurance systems in Japan. You can search for a hospital or clinic by location or by station on their website. They also offer an emergency translation service by telephone for foreign patients visiting a hospital if their treatment is not going to be carried out smoothly because of language difficulty.

In addition, the AMDA International Medical Information Center provides information on medical care and hospitals in Japan that have English-speaking staff. Visit their website.

Another option is Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Information Center and you can call on 03-5285-8181. They offer services in several languages and can also explain details about insurance etc if necessary. Another useful resource is Japan Healthcare Info which can be found here.

Emergencies

Hopefully you will never need to use this section, but if the need arises, you should be prepared. Plan in advance what to do in an emergency. Discuss with your paediatrician (or family doctor) about what to do and identify the emergency hospitals in your area.

To call for an ambulance, dial 119. Note that this is the emergency services number for fires (kaji) and ambulances (kyukyusha). (For police dial 110.) If possible, get a Japanese speaker to make the call for you, but don't hesitate to call in English when necessary.

  • The following phrases may come in handy:

  • Kyukyusha o yonde kudasai. (Please send an ambulance.)

  • Jiko desu. (There's been an accident.)

  • Watashi no kodomo wa byoki desu. (My child is sick.)

  • Watashi no namae wa _____ desu. (My name is _____.)

  • Watashi no jusho wa _____ desu. (My address is _____.)

  • Watashi no denwa bango wa _____ desu. (My telephone number is _____.)
